What is the Dutch Algorithm Register?
The Dutch Algorithm Register is a publicly accessible database where government organizations can publish information about the algorithms they use. It focuses on high-impact and high-risk AI systems, offering insight into how these algorithms function.
By making this information available, the Register enhances public trust and enables better oversight by citizens, advocates, the media, and regulatory bodies.
What algorithms should be registered?
Organizations are expected to register:
- High-risk AI systems as defined by the EU AI Act, particularly those involving autonomy and self-learning components in regulated areas like biometrics, critical infrastructure, and employment. (More about the AI Act’s risk classification)
- Algorithms that directly impact individuals, influencing legal rights, financial outcomes, or government decisions.
- Other algorithms of public interest, particularly those subject to significant public scrutiny or debate.
Currently, contributing to the Register is voluntary. However, the government is exploring the need for additional legislation. Since this is being considered alongside EU regulations, where algorithm transparency will soon be legally required, new rules may follow.
Organizations are encouraged to disclose as much information as possible, and ensuring these records remain accurate and up to date is just as crucial as the initial registration.
